How Much Downtime Can Your Business Afford?

Even short outages affect revenue, productivity and reputation. Understand your tolerance and plan for resilience.

Identify your critical systems

List the systems the business depends on, such as email, accounting, line-of-business applications, websites and file shares. For each one, ask what happens if it is unavailable for an hour, a day or a week.

Define RTO and RPO

The Recovery Time Objective (RTO) is how long a system can be down. The Recovery Point Objective (RPO) is how much data you can afford to lose. These two numbers drive backup frequency, redundancy and support arrangements.

Match investment to impact

Not every system needs high availability. Spend more on the systems with the highest impact and accept simpler protection for the rest.

Plan before the outage

A short, written recovery plan with contacts, priorities and steps reduces downtime far more than improvising during an incident.
