Backup vs Disaster Recovery: What’s the Difference?

They are related, but not the same. Know which you need and when.
All insights

Backup protects data

A backup is a copy of data that can be used to restore files, databases or systems after deletion, corruption or ransomware.

Disaster recovery restores operations

Disaster recovery (DR) is the plan and infrastructure needed to get the business running again after a major incident, such as a server failure, site outage or cyberattack. It covers people, process, priorities and infrastructure, not just data.

You need both

Backups without a recovery plan can still leave a business offline for days. A DR plan without reliable backups has nothing to recover. Together they form the basis of business continuity.

Where to start

Confirm that backups exist and can be restored, define recovery priorities for critical systems, and document the steps needed to recover them.
